Switching schools is a tough occurrence for any student to go through. Unaware of behaviors, fear of not being accepted, social anxiety, and many other factors play a part. Many of those whom have move introduce a perspective of switching schools that some are not aware of.
A reason of moving can vary depending on any situation that happens. These include matters like job and school opportunities, change of scenery, or possible hopes of a better life. Although all these reasons are valid, there is an underlying factor that some may not consider. That would be emotions of a child or student who must switch their school.
The transition may cause many emotions to arise because a student has already become comfortable to existing surrounds like friends, others, personalities, and actions. Different emotions have an effect on a student. Those emotions can range from anxiety, fear, sadness, stress, loneliness, but also potential excitement.
Allison Anderson, a junior at Collierville High School, switched from a school in Memphis to Collierville her 8th grade year. When asked about how her feelings about switching schools, she said,
“I wanted to leave that school immediately and go back to where I came from! I cried my whole first week there that’s how sad and depressed I was. Now a school like Collierville I pictured like a means girls, high school musical, Disney kind of school and I was not messing with it at ALL…but at the end of the day I’m actually glad I came to Collierville because it changed me in so many ways calmed me down all the way.”
Allison had extremely deep feelings about switching schools. She became depressed as she felt she would not fit in and already had a fixed opinion about what the school would be like. In the end, Allison adapted to Collierville with the outcome of her growing into a much calmer person.
Ultimately, switching schools has different effects on students’ emotions. Some feel resentment, anxiety, and even depression when going through the move. Learning to adapt to new people and surroundings is a scary subject, especially for young students. Gradually, those emotions change because they see the possible outcome that derives from making the moving.
