Walt Disney Animation has a company that has provided several enjoyable movies over the years, with many audiences being able to relate to the character’s struggles and how they overcome it, along with how magical some of the moments seem. It has influenced others due to their ability to create characters who go through a deep struggle, which many people can relate to, as well as giving several people representation through their different character designs. Disney also has had numerous antagonists, with many having flamboyant personalities, creative designs, and the voice acting always manages to bring them to life which is another reason as to why they are beloved just like the protagonists. Examples of favorite villains include Ursula from the Little Mermaid, Hades from Hercules, Scar from The Lion King, and Yzma from the Emperor’s New Groove. The reason why they are so beloved is that they are made with personalities that will make you laugh and a lot of what they say is relatable to viewers. However, as of recently, several of Disney’s films haven’t been well received by audiences or critics. One factor of that being that there have been several live action remakes of originally thought-out films, which are criticized due to the lack of depth, lack of character development, and the acting and emotion is off as well. Another factor is the casting such as how the actors that hired to play these live-action characters often do not resemble the original characters that were brought to life because of their stunning animation. A ton of people who grew up watching the original animated movies can say that they’ve thought the new live actions weren’t all that good because it forgot what made the original movies special. Another issue that gives Disney film backlash is who they cast, with certain cast members posting on social media which causes controversy that can affect the sales of the movie which also can cause problems for the producers, directors, and the other cast members. Notable examples include Rachel Zegler, Liu Yifei, and Gina Carano. Other examples are James Gunn and Kahiau Machado. This is important because it is easy for film companies’ quality and product to decline over time if they don’t keep up with what audience’s desire, they haven’t given something original, or anything that feels fresh and new. Another reason why new Disney animated films aren’t well received is because the sequels don’t feel as fresh as the first one and are often described as a cash grab just so that the studio can make more profits from the film. While a few of the recent Disney films haven’t been good, there are some that people enjoyed immensely. One such film that did well is Zootopia 2, which has been a major critical success and has broken several box-office records already and even though the critical reception was mixed, the live action Lilo and Stitch did very well and earned a ton of profits, allowing for a sequel to currently be in development and become the fourth-highest grossing film of 2025. In the end, even though Disney hasn’t released any true enjoyable films as of lately, it’s hopeful that they will fix the mistakes that they’ve made and that they can live up to the greatness that Disney used to have whenever a new film released.
