COLLIERVILLE, TN — A beloved local business with deep roots in the Mid-South music scene has found new life in Collierville. Consignment Music, a family-owned, used-instrument shop originally located on Park Avenue in Memphis, made the move east in early 2020—and the business has been growing ever since.
“It’s gotten a lot bigger than I ever expected it to,” said the current owner, who took over the shop after the original founder passed away. “I ran it in Memphis for a few years, but moving it to Collierville just made sense.”
The shop specializes in used instruments, particularly guitars. “I only sell used stuff. I don’t sell new,” the owner explained. “Used stuff is pretty much broken in, you know? Some need repairs, and I take care of that too.”
Repairs are a significant part of the business. Customers needing guitar maintenance or restoration can bring their instruments in Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays until around 6:30 p.m.
After initially relocating to Collierville Town Square, the shop moved again in 2024 to its current spot at 616 West Poplar Avenue, just west of Walmart. But the new location is still a temporary one—the owner hopes to expand into a larger space next door in the near future.
The shop’s roots run much deeper than just guitars. The owner’s connection to Collierville stretches back nearly two centuries. “My family’s been in Collierville for 180 years,” he said. “I guess it was Sherman that came through and burned everything down during the Civil War. My great-great-grandfather bought the land where the Town Square is now and sold lots all around it so stores could be built. That’s how the square got started.”
Music is in the family bloodline, too. The store was originally opened with the owner’s children in mind. “Both of my sons worked for me at first. One of them moved on, but my youngest still loves the business. He gets a big kick out of it.”
His own passion for music began young. “It was around 1965 or ’66. I was 12 years old and won the Collierville talent show,” he recalled. “My older brothers played guitar, and I learned by watching them. I never took lessons—it’s not something you learn overnight. You need patience, because it takes time.”
As the store settles into its new Collierville home, its mission remains the same: helping people find joy in music, one well-loved instrument at a time.
